Sort out your utilities

Turn off your water and don’t forget to write down or take pictures of your gas and electric metres. Moving home is also a great opportunity to review all your utility providers. Don’t just carry your contract over to your new home, shop around to make sure you’re getting the best deal.

Don't lose connection 

Sort out your internet in advance. From televisions to our messaging apps, so much of the way we live our lives now relies on the internet. Speak to your chosen internet provider beforehand to make sure you’re ahead of the game, as there could be a few weeks waiting list for installation.

Tell the postie 

We’ve all moved into a new home and received months of letters meant for the previous owner. You can hope that the new owner will return to sender but speaking to the Royal Mail and arranging a mail redirection will ensure you don’t miss anything important.

Take regular tea breaks

Moving house can be very tiring, and while you might be keen to get it finished as soon as possible, taking a break can help give you some more energy – helping you focus better on the task at hand. Set aside a box of coffee and tea-making items and label it clearly. You’ll be glad you’ve got it when you’re ready to take a break from packing and unpacking!

Use soft items to pad your boxes

If you’re trying to reduce the amount of packing materials you use, you can use soft materials such as clothing, blankets and towels to protect your fragile items. This can help you pack up more of your belongings, helping you make the most of your available space.

Take photos of your electronics before disconnecting them

Is there anything worse than trying to connect all of your devices after you’ve moved? It can be difficult to remember which connection goes where and can lead to a lot of time wasted as you try to figure it out. If you have containers without lids, such as baskets for your toiletries, or kitchen storage, you can still pack them securely without having to move them into another box or crate – using cling film. Cover your container tightly to prevent items from falling out or moving about during transit. This will make them much easier to unpack too as all you’ll need to do is remove the cling film.
